Members of the Keuka College community came together on Friday, March 8, to commemorate International Women’s Day, an annual celebration of the achievements of women across the globe and an acknowledgment of the injustices that women still face today.
This year’s social media campaign #BalanceForBetter focuses on forging a more gender-balanced world, celebrating women’s achievement, raising awareness of and finding strategies to counter bias, and taking action to more urgently stride toward equality.
Students, faculty, staff, and supporters gathered with the College’s Office of Intercultural Affairs in the Phillips Lounge to state their commitment to #BalanceForBetter, and take photos with “selfie cards” proclaiming strategies for progress, such as, “I will challenge stereotypes and bias.”
“Better the balance, better the world,” isn’t just a slogan, said Keuka College Associate Director of Intercultural Affairs Jamyra Young, who organized the event. “It is a description of the mindset that can lead to greater opportunities and better lives for women all around the world.”
Throughout Women’s History Month, Keuka College is celebrating the women – past and present – whose dedication, accomplishments, and influence have contributed to the College’s legacy. The commemoration of International Women’s Day served as an important component of this campaign, and a reminder that the work of elevating women requires attention to the future as well as the past.
